ABOUT THE SESSION:
This session is looking at the potential and challenges of using Creativity in Music Education. The session will introduce a theoretical framework which describes the three main challenges for students in creative music education settings and a range of techniques and strategies that support students to be creative, and that make creativity activities more predictable and less risky for educators. The idea is that having a technical framework scaffolding practice makes creative music educators more resilient, reflective, and able to deal with the unpredictable nature of creativity education.
The session will look at the role of warm ups, generating a creativity culture, and strategies and techniques for supporting composition and improvisation, plus the possibilities and constraints of creativity in groups and larger ensembles.
The session will be very hands on and fun - trying out loads of music creativity ideas. This CPD will be relevant to music educators working in any sector from Early Years through ASN, Primary, Secondary, Instrumental teaching, and beyond.
This session is part of a pilot being run by Tom & Phil Bancroft of ABC Creative Music and Glasgow Caledonian University with the support of the Creative Scotland YMI Strengthening Fund and so participants will be asked to fill out a detailed evaluation after the session.
The session will be face to face and last for 4 hours - there will be an optional 2 hour follow up session online for students who want to explore the theoretical framework further and there will also be access to free back up written resources.
Composer and musician Esther Swift attended a pilot version of this training and said:
“ The training gave me a list of concept and theories, as well as games and, practical skills and leadership skills which I was able to take away and incorporate into my own teaching and performance work immediately.
Despite having improvised for a long time in my own music practice, identifying key processes, challenges and benefits that can be derived from this practice have really helped me develop my own skills and also share this knowledge with others in a much more effective way.
Tom and Phil have also developed really useful language around these concepts, which is key in identifyingwhat the purpose of the improvisation or workshop is. E.g. is it to build confidence, create a social interactive environment, create something that everyone is proud of etc.
I think the toolkit that ABC music have developed is very significant in clearly showing what the benefits of music, creativity, and improvisation are to musicians of all levels and to society as a whole. I found this process profound, fun and engaging, and will continue to engage with the concepts I learnt in it, throughout my career.”
